Forensic Evaluations

There are as many types of forensic evaluations as there are reasons to conduct them. Typically, a forensic evaluation is triggered by a family or criminal court matter. Dr. Coughlin is most often contacted by attorneys to explore the type of evaluation that is needed; however, clients are also invited to contact the office to explore the options available. Basic assessments typically require two interviews, testing, collateral references, toxicology screening, and a document review.

When there are concerns regarding a parent’s fitness to provide care for their children, a mental health and/or substance use disorder evaluation can help. As a Masters Certified Addiction Professional, a certified Guardian ad Litem, qualified parenting coordinator, and family therapist, Dr. Coughlin is uniquely qualified to provide assessments and recommendations to protect the children’s best interests. If you wish to present the results of the assessment to the court, it is advised that Dr. Coughlin consult with your attorney to determine the scope of the evaluation.

Complex family court matters may require an in-depth assessment of the entire family in the context of their familial, work/school, and community environments. When this is recommended, Dr. Coughlin will conduct a thorough investigation, including mental health testing, multiple interviews, family observations, interview professionals and friends before writing a report.
